Saturday June 4th saw a Sileby Town CC Kwiks team entered into a very special tournament organised by Leicestershire County Cricket Club held at the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road, prior to LCCC’s T20 blast game against Durham Jets. Played on the outfield of the ‘hallowed turf’, Sileby were up against teams from Leicester Electricity Sports and Leicester Caribbeans.
Sileby were up first against LESCC. Captain for the match Ellisia Douglas-Needham lost the toss and Sileby started off out in the field, strangely, much to the teams delight? The whole team bowled consistently well over the innings with only 4 wides being delivered. Match debutant Charley Ward took the only wicket with an accurate throw the length of the wicket to run out the unlucky batsman. The opposition ended on 231 and when Sileby openers Ellisia and Flora Davies opening over included a couple of lovely 4’s things were looking good for Sileby. A steady run rate saw Sileby close in on the chasing total with an innings to spare and even with a couple of heart in mouth shots ending in dropped catches from the final pairing Sileby amassed a creditable 239 and a winning start got the team in an up-beat mood.
Sileby’s second match was against Leicester Caribbeans who had also earlier swept aside LESCC, meaning this match was to be a rehearsal of the forthcoming final. Captained this time by Flora, Sileby were put into bat first and some accurate and pacey bowling by the Leicester side had Sileby 2 wickets down early doors. Very few more runs were added throughout the innings and the loss of two more wickets soon bought Sileby back to earth with a thump. A tasty 4 from left hander Lewis Taylor catching out the Leicester field being the highlight of an innings dominated by some quality bowling and fielding. A little stunned, Sileby opened up the bowling and any thought of an instant response was soon thwarted as the LC opener hit two massive 6’s and a 4 that had already surpassed Sileby’s innings of 212. The game looked dead and buried but credit where credit is due the Sileby team held their nerve. A maiden over for Teagan Broughton and three quick wickets had the Leicester side rattled and Sileby’s hopes lifted. However, the opposition held on and finished on 218, a point less than they had after the end of the first pairing! It just goes to show, with 5 runs being deducted for a wicket you can never give up in this format of the game.
The final however was a different story, Leicester Caribbeans bought out a few of their big guns and proceeded to punish Sileby’s bowlers who couldn’t find a way through the batting onslaught. Seven 4’s and four 6s helped them on to a massive score of 285. Their Bowling was equal to their batting and 4 wickets and 3 maiden overs saw Sileby finish on 189. (Bless ‘em, they start at 200!). Still, a boundary saving bit of quality fielding from Ellisia earned rightful praise from the opposition manager in what was a bit of an anti-climax of a final. Nevertheless, everyone had an absolute ‘blast’, the weather was fab and Leicestershire went on to beat Durham by 6 wickets in the T20 match so we all had something to celebrate!
Many thanks to all the parents and siblings for staying and cheering on the team and to the players themselves for the way they conducted themselves throughout the afternoon, a credit to themselves and the club.
